After a wild tour of eras ranging from World War II to the far future, Call of Duty is returning to the modern day with a reboot of the iconic Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The new Modern Warfare returns to the high-tech gear of modern times, introducing state-of-the-art weaponry and technology employed in combat during the present day, rather than outdated machines of an older era or futuristic sci-fi arsenals. However, we are following a new timeline with familiar faces. Captain Price returns as the hardened hero of Bravo 6, with other returns hinted when Price mentions “old comrades” during the trailer.

Modern Warfare will be the first part of the series utilizing a new game engine, which should allow for drastic graphical improvements over its older titles. The last time a different engine was introduced was 14 years ago, so this will bring a fresh new design to a long lasting franchise.

The most significant reveal of this new Modern Warfare is that the game is focused on real life events, with an emphasis on darkly emotional storylines first found with the controversial “No Russian” mission in Modern Warfare 2, which depicted an undercover CIA agent taking part in a mass shooting of civilians in a crowded Russian airport. The trailer so far has shown a terrorist attack in a busy city, and children wearing gas masks in a contested warzone. Modern Warfare is cranking up the Darkness Dial to 11 to show us the horrors that war can inflict and the difficult choices that soldiers must make.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) is developed by Infinity Ward, published by Activision, and is set to be released on October 25, 2019 for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
